Scientists are researching the global climate at a former submarine base. Under the ice, however, there is still a submarine with a gold treasure on board, for which certain people are concerned.

A mediocre action movie with a few too many characters and a routine storyline. The cast consists almost entirely of well-known stars, but no one really stands out. The film does have one beautiful scene, and that is when Sutherland enters the submarine for the first time. The chases in the snow were spectacular at times, but not engaging enough. Nice to have seen it once, but nothing special.

Action/adventure film with many famous names. But too generic to impress.
Especially worth watching for the chases and skirmishes with the
Snowmobiles in the vast snowy landscape. All the famous actors come a little bit
get over it dutifully, but are also a bit 'snowed under' by the thin script.

The book was different, it.
It really has been a seriously long time since I last read it, and to say that I still remember much of it is a real exaggeration, but a quick look at the usual sources makes that at least clear. Just as the film wasn't shot on Bear Island, but in Alaska and British Columbia. Also that it was edited too roughly to avoid sensitivities – although I believe I saw the version that didn't fall under that category, but who still remembers exactly what had already been cut out of that one? As an idea, the story is hardly unique in any case, and the way it is told lacks suspense a bit too much. Ultimately, it is perhaps a variation on Treasure Island or R. Crusoe, but I thought there had been something similar before in the scarier genre of gold and Germans.
Nevertheless, the cast is truly magnificent—Sutherland foremost, of course, but also Richard Widmark, Vanessa Redgrave, Christopher Lee, Lloyd Bridges, and even Bruce Greenwood in his first film role. In any case, any film starring someone named Inge Von Zipper in the script deserves an Oscar—it’s just a matter of which one.
It's a shame that the plot relies a bit too much on the action, and especially on the shenanigans with snowmobiles or whatever those things are called. A bit too much James Bond without Bond; a greater focus on intrigue could easily have resulted in a much better film.
And another thing, the soundtrack. Oscar for the most overly dramatic music ever, and right at the beginning, even before anything is happening. Calm your jets, I think.
