"How do you grow up when your parents haven't?"
Because of her masculine haircut and attitude, Lucy (Sarah Bolger) is considered one of the boys. She gets along well with her father (James Marsden) but is regularly separated from him for months when he works in Canada. When Lucy turns 14, she begins to change and shed her boyish image. Then she finds out that her parents' marriage isn't as good as she always thought, and her mother is having a romance with a co-worker. There also appears to be more behind her father's long Canadian trips.
