Kotoko plot

A young mother has eye problems and suffers from double vision. When she looks at someone, she sees two people: a negative person and a positive person. Because of this, she never feels comfortable around people. The only times she doesn't see double is when she's singing. In those moments she feels peace. Caring for her baby also turns out to be a nerve-wracking task. This eventually leads to a nervous breakdown and she is accused of taking bad care of her child. Her child is taken away from her.

Tight and at times impressively intense film. The cooking scene, the first meeting with Tsukamoto (delusion), the rain dance; all scenes in which camera work and sound work wonderfully together to portray madness. I absolutely cannot follow the criticism that this is an ugly film. Cocco is also doing very well. When you see her crawling on the ground, panting, bloodied and with snot smeared all over her face, you can hardly help but conclude that she fully empathizes with her role.

Still, I won't give it a 4* for now because I largely liked the part with Tsukamoto. I love absurdism and black humor, but in this film I found it neither appropriate nor successful. In any case, the entire middle section is a lot less intense and sometimes a bit on the bland side. Fortunately, it didn't take too long before the film went back on the more serious tour.

But anyway, certainly a fascinating experience.

Edit: Just updated, the film still resonates for a long time.

Intense, breathless sitting watching Cocco's phenomenal acting. The filming method fits perfectly with Cocco's chaotic brain, you are so close to it all the time. Wonderful!

Solid film by Shinya Tsukamoto about a woman who has gone quite off track.

Schizophrenic, borderline? That seems like the first thing you think of. In the beginning, little is given away and the woman has mixed views. In one view people are nice to her and in the other view the same person seems to want to do something to her... or what she would do herself.

Kotoko may not be Tsukamoto's best. After many of his dynamic titles, this is a bit of a drag, but it does lack subtlety a bit. Especially when we have to deal with Kotoko's child who screams and screams throughout almost the entire film. Then a relief that the fact that she threw the child off the roof is fortunately only a vision. But otherwise, these kinds of events in this film seem to be expressed in snapshots.

Ultimately we find out why Kotoko has gotten to this point and the idea of trying to play along with the neighbors (and during that family vacation) is interesting. That relationship with that one neighbor was also one of those typical weird moments.

That doesn't mean the movie isn't good. The concept is good. The atmosphere is chaotic and sultry, but once again it lacked the necessary boosters.

3.5*
