Horrible Christmas musical with a cast that is simply not likeable. I thought it was all phoneys, trying to represent the 'oh so cozy fifties' atmosphere. That doesn't resonate with me anymore. I also found the songs, including the well-known White Christmas, dull across the board.

An appropriate title if you look outside now.
The movie seemed to struggle a bit to get going and for me personally didn't get any better until they arrived at the hotel.
White Christmas has a wonderful feel-good and typical 50s atmosphere and that was the reason for me to keep watching.
A slow start is made up for as the chemistry between Phil and Bob & the Haynes sisters is given time to grow.
Not the ultimate Christmas movie for me, but definitely worth it because of the warm atmosphere and the heartwarming ending.
3*

I don't think anyone would mistake this for a classical or even major musical, but if I adjust my expectations I actually find so many strong points here that my original skepticism vanished as quickly as my dim memory of the first time I saw this movie. Bing Crosby always makes everything seem careless but still remains believable, after a number of other films I only now experience the qualities of Danny Kaye (charm, humor and dance), Rosemary Clooney sings like the best (Love, you didn' t do right by me, beautiful) and Vera-Ellen dances even better, Dean Jagger plays moving, the camera work and use of color are both beautiful without Singin' in the rain- like candy cane colors, and Irving Berlin delivers several catchy songs. (The 1954 audience was also enthusiastic about it, because it was the most successful film of that year.) The only downside, in my opinion, is the appearance of Vera-Ellen's figure, because her legs are so uncomfortably thin that it is a miracle is that there are so many disciplined muscles in it that she dances the stars of heaven - and she can dance. (She's rumored to be anorexic.) I just forget about the lame miscommunication plot and enjoy the songs, the dance, the sets, and the feel-good atmosphere.
