"When the lights go down, the inmates will rise."

George, Max and Ricky form a rock band and wait for their big break. In the meantime they work in the kitchen of an extra secured insane asylum and have no personal contact with the patients. One night just before dinner, a storm causes the security system to fail. As a result, the doors of the cells open and it is not long before all the madmen are out of their cells. Help is on the way, but the three will have to survive until it arrives.

Lacks some serious punch to impress. Scores points especially in the first part where it shows a rare form of patience. Clearly a European collaboration in that respect. Still, Courtes is not skilled enough to make it just that little bit more. Just a little too dark, just a little too soft.. Too bad.

Watched this because Zahler was apparently behind the script. That turned out to be the best thing about the film, because a concept like this could have been directed with a bit more verve. Quite a few nice characters and here and there some gore moments that jump out, but the direction is just pretty boring, nothing more can be made of it. Not enough atmosphere is extracted from the otherwise great setting, audiovisually there is little to experience and the film just meanders along obligatorily without daring to really step on the gas anywhere. Not unpleasant for once, but could have been more. 2.5*

The wannabe rock stars George, Max and Ricky work as cooks in an institution for the mentally ill. The daily workday is somewhat depressing. The cold and stuffy atmosphere in the institution does not help. Gallows humor does help. The first part of the film describes the daily routine and gives the viewer the opportunity to get to know the characters and to wrap themselves in the sad atmosphere. The film lays down a good foundation on which to build tension.

Then something does happen, but ultimately too little happens. There is action that alternates with large chunks of film in which very little happens. Not in a physical sense. Not in a psychological sense. Not in a narrative sense. Long chunks of film that are rather soporific. In contrast, there are short chunks of film that show intense and pleasant slaughter. The balance between rest and action is not right. Too much rest. Not enough action. Not enough psychology. Not enough suspense. Deadly for the tension. That keeps disappearing.

Director Alexandre Courtès focuses very promisingly on a few individual patients who are each very dangerous, but quickly loses sight of the individual touch. Too bad. The dangerous individuals quickly become part of the horde of lunatics who act and react as one. A murderous mass without contours that goes on a brutal and barbaric rampage. Without nuance. Without finesse. The threat could have been worked out a bit more inventively.

Weak ending also with a suggestive twist that is not worth dwelling on for long. So I don't. And so the film ends after a strong beginning and a not very exciting middle part also somewhat disappointing. It is what it is. The Incident is simply not a memorable film.
