An atmospheric film made in the style of a documentary in which a ritual forms the common thread. A fairly long running time, which causes the film to collapse considerably in between, but which has a fairly strong scene, especially with the scene in the woods, and also contains an interesting ending. The story is a bit simple and in terms of tension it is disappointing. The Psychic was shouting too much and that started to annoy me. I came across Noroi on a list of the best Asian horror films, but I personally couldn't agree with that.

A horror with its own face. We follow a documentary filmmaker who investigates the supernatural and get to see his latest documentary, which was supposedly labeled "too scary to show". It's a low budget found footage film in the style of a fake documentary, which also includes "TV show clips" about the paranormal (those exuberant TV shows reminded me of teleshopping broadcasts in style). It takes some effort to get into the story, but the script and editing are remarkably well put together, so that the film manages to grab you. That does not alter the fact that there are also pieces in which the eyelids become very heavy. In particular, the part in which a "super psychic" with an aluminum hat 'talks about worms' for minutes at a time felt very heavy (and off-topic). If they had cut something in that already generous 115 minutes, it would have resulted in a much better film.

It's all been done before, but this one still feels quite unique and is worth watching in that sense. Due to the negatives, I unfortunately do not get further than a spacious 2.5 *.

Hmm, afterwards I seem to have seen a version without any soundtrack. A pity, since I now see that this is apparently seen as one of the strong points of the film.

Furthermore, horror mockumentaries are my thing and this one also appealed to me. Noroi gets off to a slow start, actually the film never really gets going, but somewhere there is the power. The creepy and understated atmosphere of the film slowly slumbers and when you hardly expect it as a viewer, it sometimes suddenly becomes quite freaky. Like during the very last scene which is really very effective.

No jump scares, gore, tension building or explicit horror, but an atmospheric mystery that is ten times more effective than most horror films when needed. No idea if the film will be better with or without a soundtrack, but not 3.5* either.
