The father of former gunslinger Jim Slater, who belonged to a group of five men, is said to have been killed in an ambush in the Gila Valley by the Apaches. Jim is looking for the lone survivor of this ambush. This survivor would know more about a missing shipment of gold worth $60,000. By finding him, Jim hopes to shatter his father's reputation as a gold thief. Jim is helped in his search by the irresistible widow Karyl Orton, whose husband is also said to have been killed in this ambush. Jim and Karyl's quest through Arizona turns out to be not without its perils.
