The Face at the Window plot
In 1880, the criminal named The Face is responsible for a murderous rampage in France. When the Brisson Bank in Paris is robbed and employee Michelle is murdered, the wealthy Chevalier Lucio del Gardo is the only chance to save the bank. Chevalier proposes to the owner M. de Brisson to deposit a large amount of gold, but in return he wants to marry his daughter Cecile. However, Cecile falls in love with the efficient clerk Lucien Cortier who belongs to the lower class and refuses to marry Chevalier. To get rid of his rival, Chevalier manipulates the incompetent chief of the Paris police and uses evidence to incriminate Lucien.

Nice film and through excellent use of music and great editing I found this film entertaining and exciting. Of course there is the 40s look with somewhat theatrical acting, but that is part of it.
I found the atmosphere of Paris 1880 particularly well expressed in various locations.
Tod Slaughter plays a good character, an unsympathetic man who is after the daughter of the bank owner. But she is in love with the clerk who works there, intrigues follow.
In between there is a crime plot with a mysterious and creepy 'Wolf man' who terrorizes the city and leaves a trail of dead. The police are busy tracking down this terror of the city.

Well, I still had a better feeling than my two predecessors here. The story was captivating enough and the evil character Chevalier Lucio del Gardo is portrayed in a light-hearted but also very mean way. He actually outplays the other actors with his role. John Warwick as Lucien Cortier is really a stiff rake without any convincing emotion. Marjorie Taylor as Cecile de Brisson does a decent job. Of course, the face at the window and the sound that goes with it are the horror moment of the film, because the rest of the horror elements are just simple murders. The final scene is well-done by using a trick instead of relying on a bizarre scientific experiment. 6/10

It's funny how 'The Face at the Window' (1939) takes different elements from Frankenstein and does something different with them. Even in a different genre than horror/SF, because at its core this short film is actually more of a crime mystery. But in the logic of the story it fits that a monstrous figure roams the streets of Paris and that a mad professor pumps electricity through bodies to bring last confessions to life. It's not very logical or credible, but it's all the more amusing. Especially because Tod Slaughter plays such a wonderfully over-the-top villain role as the evil Chevalier Lucio del Gardo. Although it's a bit disappointing that the title monster doesn't actually play a role in the murders. Another element from Frankenstein: the misunderstood monster who is blamed for other people's sins.
