L'Aveu plot

In a nightmarish atmosphere of persecution and political arbitrariness, L'aveu reveals the facts behind the infamous Prague trials of 1952. Jorge Semprun edited the biography of the communist Artur London, the Czech minister who was overpowered by the security service in 1951. What follows is a Kafkaesque mystery in which London undergoes a perverse, sophisticated and grueling interrogation. He must confess that he committed treason and espionage to the detriment of the communist cause.

This film is not very accessible, which does require a fair amount of knowledge of the post-war political situation.

In any case, instructive and cleverly made and based on the unmistakable great talent of the late Yves Montand and with the conclusion, as in so many war and related films: What has it all been for?

As a successor to Z (1969), Costa-Gavras comes up with another political thriller, which I think is a lot less than its predecessor. The middle section in particular is a bit on the long-winded side because it's too much of the same, no matter how awful.

Outstanding roles by Yves Montand and Gabriele Ferzetti; Simone Signoret's is hardly more than a supporting role.

A serious, dry and oppressive political thriller. So quite heavy stuff and actually exactly what you expect from this director. Nevertheless, an intelligently elaborated treatise on how truths are twisted for political ends, if possible through conspiracy theories. Fortunately, the quick editing gives the whole thing momentum, so that you can overlook the now rather dated communist jargon.

I had no idea at all that this was a factual story.
