I thought it was better in some respects than the 1997 version, which I found a bit mundane.
The world-famous story is reduced here to a film of just under an hour and a half.
This director wastes no time, but gets to the point in every minute. Typically a feature of older films, I personally like that. Nowadays we take the time to tell such a story in more detail, but in this version from 1954 it works wonderfully well.
For me, the best film about a drowning man and his fight against the elements and loneliness remains Cast Away, mainly due to Hanks' superior acting in that film. The lead actor in this film, Dan O'Herlihy, does a decent job here, but never became a great actor, and that makes a difference when you have to carry a film on your own.

Surprisingly conventional film by Luis Buñuel is a compact, entertaining version of Daniel Defoe's famous story that successfully combines the elements of adventure, drama, humor and social criticism. Dan O'Herlihy is fine as the spoiled drowning man who learns not only that he doesn't need servants to survive, but also that skin color and cultural background are no barrier to interdependence and friendship. Clearly a cheap production, but that hardly appears to be an objection.

It's interesting how open this version is about something often glossed over: Robinson Crusoe was a slave trader who enslaved Friday and filled him with his own ideas. This is primarily a rather compact version, packing the 28 years, 2 months, and 19 days into an hour and a half. It's driven by a voiceover (especially for Friday's arrival). The Oscar-nominated Dan O'Herlihy's performance is a bit more forceful as Crusoe, but that suits the technicolor Sunday afternoon atmosphere. Incidentally, it's the only Bunuel film financed with American money. Initially, Orson Welles was considered for the lead role, but when Bunuel and company watched Macbeth (1948) to see how Welles would look with a beard, he wanted Dan O'Herlihy. Bunuel stood firm and got his first choice. As far as I'm concerned, there's no trace of Bunuel's idiosyncrasy, and for such a classic adventure film, it's also quite visibly low-budget.
