Juan de los Muertos plot

"He's Havana killer day."

The 40-year-old Juan has lived most of his life in Cuba, where he and his friend Lázaro fill his days with doing nothing. Juan's only emotional connection is with his daughter Camila. Suddenly strange things happen: people become violent and attack each other. Gradually, Juan and his friends discover that the attackers are not normal people and it is difficult to kill them. A simple bite also turns the victim into a killing machine, and the only way to kill them is to destroy their brains. Juan decides that the best way to deal with the situation is to make money from it.

Cuban wink.

This Spanish-language zombie film starts out very hopeful. Nice settings, nice characters and a comical character that we already know from many predecessors. So no original basis, but if it works then you have something. And that's certainly the case during the first half of the film, when Juan and his cronies find out that their beloved neighborhood has been hit by an epidemic, resulting in bloodthirsty zombies. Especially the run-up to this provides a number of cheerful and interesting scenes.

When the zombies start to gain the upper hand and the people of the undead have to be eliminated, it doesn't happen in the most inventive way unfortunately. Although one of the first killings still offers some solace in that area. The oar that Juan uses is anything but a successful murder weapon and the actual gore is also a bit disappointing. The cheap CGI can be forgiven the makers, were it not for the fact that the film now and then comes to a halt and the rhythm hangs too much on a potpourri of strung together and only partially working action scenes.

Now the title, which refers to the stronger 'Shaun of the Dead' is of course also a bit unfortunate. Although the idea behind it is quite nice, but then you actually have to come up with something better than this. Only the Cuban setting, the political jokes and the winks to the real cult work are unfortunately not enough. Had one been able to maintain the angle of the first three quarters of an hour and not have lost oneself in excess, then a small masterpiece was in the offing. Not now.

Reasonable.

From a technical point of view, Juan of the Dead has become a reasonable film. Of course it can be seen that less money has been available, but this is not a problem. This is mainly about the comedy and it works, partly. The humor dominates at times just too much so that the zombie plague does not come across as threatening. In addition, the film does not always run smoothly. For example, the story starts too slowly and halfway through it also manages to deprive the viewer of the attention. Perhaps the director could have considered using the animated scenes that appear during the credits halfway through the film. Nevertheless, Juan of the Dead entertains and has a special setting in Cuba that excellently depicts conflict between paradise and the apocalypse.

One that does its very best to be funny and then now and then something goes wrong, along the way there is a bit of saturation and so it all gets a bit more difficult towards the end, but it still scores with a smile on a regular basis. With mostly obvious humor, such as the usual winks, the messing about with the killing of the undead and also some social satire. Cuba is perfect for that. The attitude of Juan and his companions is the most stable factor. In the sense of fun. We kill your loved ones and stuff. There is some Ugandan CGI and the like, but that fits in with the silly atmosphere. Not special, but not bad either.
