After having seen the nice and atmospheric (because of the location where the story takes place) sequel to this film last week, namely "Turks & Caicos (2014 )", so it was now the turn of the first part. This film was also reasonable, but personally I found it less and that was mainly due to the environment (I personally find England a bit boring) where the story takes place and also due to the lesser-known cast (they picked up quite a bit in the sequel there). out big). It is also all too stiff while the sequel was still quite loose and also contained some humor here and there.

The political story manages to fascinate and, just like the sequel, revolves around the many dialogues and the different characters. As a result, you have to stay focused in order to follow it all properly. The story is slow and is also quite long-winded and because little happens, it is relatively boring. In that respect, I can well imagine that people experience this film as "sleep-inducing". Lead actor Bill Nighy in the role of MI5 officer Johnny Worricker does a creditable job and the same goes for lead actress Rachel Weisz in the role of Nancy Pierpan, who of course also looks nice. Although Ralph Fiennes again had a small role as Prime Minister Alec Beasley, he did a creditable job.

All in all, this very stiff first part was a bit disappointing and I had trouble following it all. That's partly because I wasn't always focused on the story. Although I didn't like this movie, I will definitely watch the third part "Salting the Battlefield (2014)".

Johnny Worricker [Bill Nighy] is an MI5 veteran who senses danger when his boss and best friend Benedict Baron [Michael Gambon] draws him into a discussion of a sensitive dossier involving some political leaders, including Prime Minister Alec Beasley [Ralph Fiennes], to embarrass. The only people Johnny seems to be able to trust are an old colleague [Ewan Bremner] and a neighbor [Rachel Weisz] who approach him. Nighy is perfect in the title role and the impressive supporting cast keeps this interesting, despite it relying almost entirely on dialogue. Received two sequels in 2014: Turk and Caicos and Salting the Battlefield.

Solid political drama-thriller, which is especially striking because of the smooth and convincing acting. I'm not much of a political person, but it's manageable. The British also succeed in these kinds of films in always adding a small layer of subtle humor, which makes it a bit easier to watch. The kiss scene at the end is completely unnecessary.
