"A man with a secret. A woman with a dream."
Ireland, 19th century. Albert, a shy butler, has had a big secret for years: in reality he is a woman who has to dress and behave like a man all her life. When the handsome painter Hubert Page arrives at the hotel, Albert tries to escape the false identity she has created for herself. She gathers all her courage to court the beautiful young maid Helen, in whom she has found a soul mate. But Helen is more interested in the new handyman Joe.

A very remarkable story that, in addition to the events surrounding Albert Nodds, still provides a penetrating picture of the enormous, painful distinction in classes that prevailed at the time and how everyone at the bottom of the ladder hoped for a much better life.
Good movie but not really convincing and only towards the end with the necessary emotion.
Glenn Close of course steals most of the credit, although there are more who act very well.

This was on TV and once picked up and thought it was a good movie. Not an everyday topic, but worth checking out. The cast did a great job and the movie looked good.
Still a surprising ending.

Tragic story about a woman who goes through life as a male butler. A life in which she lives like a shadow in the service of others. A story that broaches some taboo topics from late 19th century Ireland/England such as the fate of illegitimate children, lesbians... Nobbs dreams of a tobacco trade and saves her hard-earned money . The ending is sad as befits such a movie. I thought it was a nice film, although it does get tedious every now and then. It deserved to be a film that makes you quiet, but that was not the case here.
