Le Havre plot

'Le Havre' tells the story of Marcel Marx, a former writer and well-known Bohemian. He has retired to voluntary exile in the French port of Le Havre, where he works as an honorable but not-so-profitable shoe shiner. Marcel has buried his dreams of a literary breakthrough, and lives happily within the triangle of his favorite bar, his job and his wife Arletty, when fate suddenly throws an underage immigrant refugee from Africa in his path. Using his innate optimism and his unwavering solidarity with the residents of his neighborhood as his only weapon, Marcel will take on the fishing nets of the police, which are increasingly closing around the young refugee.

Nice film in which a poor shoe shiner helps a young illegal refugee with his crossing to England. Quite simple in execution and rather minimalist in the emotions of the actors. This creates a somewhat different atmosphere. Even though the film deals with a fairly heavy subject, it doesn't get really heavy.

Distinctive style with very dry subtle humor. I think that's what makes this film different and what makes it more than satisfactory from me, it's the quiet moments that the camera captures the gaze of the sometimes apathetic looking characters that make the film strong.

A modest artistic, theatrical and caricature (all in a positive sense) work. The simple story was almost secondary to the style here. 3 to 3.5*

Strange movie. It is about a contemporary story with refugees who are stranded in France on their way to England. However, the whole style of the film breathes the atmosphere of the early 1960s, complete with vintage cars and an inspector who seems to have escaped Maigret, this is combined with an idealized time of the French resistance against the Nazis. Which makes the whole thing a special movie experience.
