Flying Leathernecks plot

"From Guadalcanal to Okinawa...the Marine air-devils blazed a trail of glory...while the women they left behind fought battles of their own!"

Major Dan Kirby (Wayne) and Captain Carl Griffin (Ryan) engage in a classic battle for leadership. Kirby is an old-fashioned man and, according to Griffin, takes his men way too hard.

Because of the F1, I only played the classic on Sunday afternoon and this time the choice fell on Flying Leathernecks and with that a film that made me very happy to come across it at the thrift store, even though the grade averages are not super.

The story may be clear around the new commander named Kirby who comes before the group and makes his mark in old ways. At the same time, he unwittingly runs into Captain Griffin who was favored by the group itself and does not agree with Kirby's approach, it concerns a recurring clash within the difficult battlefield of the pacific starting with Guadalcanal with a barely captured airfield and a victory that is still far from certain from where they will continue to presumably Betio, the Marianas, the Marianas Turkey-shoot, Iwo, Okinawa and the necessary naval battles and, as expected, much is filled in on the basis of archive images.

And although they are sometimes wrong with those archive images and have edited everything together, the idea of the hard battle in combination with the innovative idea of direct air support comes across more than fine. Add to that the fact that Wayne is a little less insufferable than usual with his usual omniscient air, and Flying Leathernecks is actually quite a nice film that should be seen especially in the era of the early 1950s because it is sometimes on the good side and the whole also regularly drags despite the short playing time. Still, the image may be there, just like the humor around the foerer who wants the best for his unit. For now a cautious 3 stars, but who knows with a review in the long term...
