An old Cuban fisherman, Santiago, who has spent most of his life alone, sets out to find himself and catch something again after losing his only friend, a young Cuban boy. Fishing has not gone well for him in recent months: he has been dry for more than eighty days. During this new trip, however, he catches a very large fish. However, before Santiago can retrieve it, this fish is snatched away by a pack of sharks. Santiago must then deliver a grand duel to the death with the sharks...
