The Awakening plot

"Sometimes dead does not mean gone."

The Awakening is set in 1921, in a post-war time of despair and loss where the bereaved seek their solace in spirituality. Haunted by the death of her fiancé, Florence spends her time unmasking supernatural phenomena. She uses methodical and rational explanations to disprove the claim that the dead can haunt us. So she feels obliged to accept a proposal to go to Rookwood, to a rural boarding school where a boy was recently found dead. There are rumors of a ghost of a boy haunting the school, spreading panic among students and parents.

Kind of in the vein of The Woman in Black... But it didn't come until a year later.

Otherwise a decent ghost thriller. Atmospheric images, a nice coincidence with history, good acting... and a whole search for everything that happens in that orphanage.

However, this one isn't that exciting... Maybe because I'm used to these kinds of movies. But he is smart... Many mindfucks and the fact that you can find out who or what... and how. The school atmosphere is also portrayed grimly here. You do feel a bit for the time when the children were treated very severely. And then the twist... I think I saw it coming a little bit... But it was still strong enough.

More of the same almost... But nevertheless very entertaining and atmospheric. Apparently the film had to rely mainly on the latter...

3.5*

OK.

Film that does have its good moments, but in general it doesn't really become the top film it could be. I especially regret that viewing guide, this could have had some pretty exciting moments in the genre itself.

Hall is doing well fortunately, and also seems to be the only one who doesn't behave too bad, besides West. The rest seem to try a little too hard to play one type. As a result, they often come across as rather moronic and supernatural. As if they are not of this world.

Fortunately, the film isn't too boring, although it takes quite a while before the horror really arrives. Before that, there is first some introduction, drama and small thriller moments. I think the haunted house only slowly comes into play after 30 minutes.

Now I have to admit, the horror was quite exciting and good, better than I expected. Beautifully and atmospherically portrayed with a nervous soundtrack and some good ideas that fit well into the film, so that it still remains quite unpredictable.

It is a pity that apart from a few tense moments and small scares, the film is never terrifying. And with a director like this this could have been done quite easily. Towards the end the story also goes in the right direction in terms of images, but the twist itself disappoints a bit. As if the time still had to be filled for a while.

But otherwise not a bad horror film.

1921 From 1914 to 1919, more than 1 million Britons died as a result of the war or the flu epidemic, making it also known as 'the time of the ghosts'. Florence Cathcart [Rebecca Hall] investigates alleged ghostly apparitions, ostensibly to expose charlatans, but her true motives are very personal. Robert Mallory [Dominic West] invites her to a boy's boarding school where the ghost of a boy who was murdered there haunts. Once there, Florence begins to experience delusions – or are they memories? – which make her research considerably more difficult. A strong cast makes the most of an unoriginal ghost story that, while having some atmospheric moments, ruins it with a weak ending.
