Paris, the early 60s: the time of cocktails, suits, expensive Chevrolets and high society. The wealthy Jean-Louis Joubert is a good but dull man. Until he and his wife hire the beautiful Spanish María as a maid. Maria introduces him to the sixth floor of his bourgeois apartment building where she lives with other temperamental Spanish workers. These women, but especially the very attractive Maria, teach him to enjoy life for the first time. This much to the dismay of Mrs. Joubert and her friends...

A witty comedy about the contrast between rich and poor and French and Spanish. It is a kind of upstairs-downstairs where the upper class lives downstairs and the lower class upstairs. The rich cling to hollow etiquette and rules of conduct, while the less well-off display a popular zest for life. You start to wonder how Joubert became a successful businessman if he feels so out of place in that environment. His spoiled sons are unbearable. You may get a bit too much of an image of the vain rich and the noble poor. Fabrici Luchini and Natalia Verbeke radiate zest for life.
