Oh man, really enjoying an old-school action movie from China again. Wonderful fight scenes that are compelling and especially towards the end they are really breathtaking. I also like the fact that there are a number of small gestures in it (that the main character eventually literally dies in the hands of Buddha I found very striking).

Reasonable story, cool action and a lot of life wisdom make Shaolin a winner in my eyes.

4*
8/10 (IMDB)

I had only seen a few Jackie Chan movies from Benny Chan, which were certainly not bad. With Shaolin he is more likely to bring an epic film, albeit with the necessary martial arts battles. The whole thing is beautiful to see, but nowhere does Chan manage to rise above it all the way. In any case, the decor is successful and you notice that a nice budget has been provided here. The fighting was neat, but not overwhelming. The story was interesting, but it didn't really hit the spot. And that should be the point with such an epic subject. The humor comes of course from Chan, who is gradually getting older but can definitely still keep up.

Thanks to the beautiful setting, the strong actors and sufficient action and humor, Shaolin has still become a pleasant film. Better material can be found in the genre, but it never gets bad. It doesn't always have to be memorable, the quality is already there.

A very nice film, a really good story, good drama, action and a bit of humor from jackie chan, whatever cheers you up during the film, the ending is intense but that's the beauty of the film.

Give a 4.5
