"Welcome to our house."
Somewhere in a corner of central Tokyo, Kobayashi lives with his young wife, his daughter from a previous marriage and his divorced sister. The only recent notable event in this hardworking and industrious family is the disappearance of their parakeet, Pi-chan. One day, Kagawa appears, claiming to be the son of a wealthy family that once provided financial support to Kobayashi. Kagawa moves in with the family and the life of the Kobayashis slowly but surely begins to change under the influence of Kagawa and the visitors he brings with him.

Mediocre. Basically this could be a really fun movie, but it's all presented so flatly and the possible humor from situations and conflicts is never really carried through. Towards the end, the part when all those people come into the house, have to go to the toilet etc, is funny for a while, but in the end not much is done with it. And that's how this whole movie is, nicely flowing but therefore rather boring. The acting is reasonable and visually there is little to admire. 2.0*.

A promising film that eventually gets bogged down in something surreal, but in a negative way. I don't really understand the director's motivation and goal. Where did he want to go with this film? This is definitely not Borgman, to name a few.
It is interesting how a strange man manages to worm his way into a family. Little by little he increases his control over the family, although they are uncomfortable with it. Still, I missed that click in the how and why. The man is not a manipulative sociopath. And as the film progresses, it does not really improve. Of course there is some blackmail involved, but those subplots themselves were not that great either.
I found the neighborhood environment with the neighborhood committee and the women watching who had their own opinions about the strange events at Mikio's house more interesting. The film is more of a satirical view of the Japanese xenophobia that still prevails on the closed island. Foreigners stand out and are only trusted with difficulty. Nice also those small nice things in the Japanese culture and lifestyle. And Kiki Sugino was anything but a punishment to watch. It is also the latter who is central in the film and the only one who realizes that the stable family life is falling apart because of this intruder.
