Quite a few dark (literally) passages in this film, which is an adaptation of the play of the same name.

It's not all that exciting and, apart from the final scene, the film, which certainly emphasises how painful love can be, failed to appeal to me.

I ultimately found that typical British pub singing to be a breath of fresh air, with Jo Stafford's "You belong to me" neatly and nostalgically on top.

Too heavy stuff. Apart from a few angry outbursts, it's a tame film about a woman's extramarital affair with a former RAF pilot who doesn't suit her at all. Too aloof a film to be captivating.

In London around 1950, Hester [Rachel Weisz] attempts suicide because she is caught between two hopeless relationships. The one with her respectable husband [Simon Russell Beale] who still loves her and wants to uphold the family honor, and the one with her lover [Tom Hiddleston], a former RAF pilot who refuses to commit. Well acted and beautifully filmed by Florian Hoffmeister, this dialogue-driven romantic melodrama is better suited to the stage.
