In the autumn of 1944, the Czech sailor Karel is anchored in the Elbe near Dresden. He amuses himself with seducing German girls and stealing tobacco to ensure that he has acquired a nice capital after the war. Then he meets Ulrika, the daughter of a German officer and finds to his horror that he is now really in love.
