The Dark Side of the Moon plot

"Beyond Rescue ... Beyond Reason ... Beyond Salvation"

The year is 2022. A repair crew is tasked with repairing a faulty satellite with a nuclear weapon on board. When they arrive, however, it turns out to be a chilly place. They are clearly not alone. The only lead is a mysterious and bloodied corpse with a triangular wound on board.

Made on a low budget, and it shows. Visually not particularly worthwhile, and the cast is unremarkable, but the intriguing script is suspenseful, and the whole thing is inventive and atmospheric. I saw it on video once; I'm curious to see what it will look like on DVD after all these years. First, I'll have to find it, of course...

Unknown, unloved. As a fan of low-budget space horror from (primarily) the 80s and 90s, Dark Side of the Moon was a title that had been on the shelves for a while. After seeing the Blu-ray release from Unearthed Films, it's especially unfortunate that it received so little attention. Especially because Webster's approach is very different from most of its counterparts with similar budgets. Where the original focus was primarily on cheesy, slimy Alien entertainment, Dark Side of the Moon is a film entirely focused on atmosphere and the growing paranoia among the crew. That oppressive, lost feeling aboard a classic, grimy spaceship. Stylishly shot and lit, always complementing the impressive sets, but partly hampered by questionable acting. A minor blemish on this hidden gem, which deservedly received a sleek new transfer.

Still, a major disappointment considering the many good reviews I'd already read here and there. A plus, of course, is the grimy spaceship with the fantastic lights and push buttons, creating a suitably eerie atmosphere. Unfortunately, the story fails to captivate and never becomes exciting. The gore is also a major letdown. But that last part shouldn't be a criticism. The acting is also rather mediocre, and the voice of the person bringing the disaster became increasingly irritating as the film progressed. 5/10
