Quite a decent movie, despite my disinterest in surfing. The story is told calmly and the shark scene was fine.

The camera work was okay, although the makers must have needed the computer many hours to get all this into the picture so beautifully.

The acting wasn't bad either. I don't think Dennis Quaid is a deserving actor, and Helen Hunt is almost always good.

All in all an entertaining film, quite predictable, but for once not that bad.

Enough.

Ugh, not so good. You apparently have a lot of people who have nothing else to do in their lives but to surf and go to parties. In this film Hawaii seems like a true "island of pleasure", just a bit too cool. What happened to Bethany Hamilton is indeed a major setback, and her courage and willpower are admirable. The film is too drowned in emo moments, ethnic chants, syrupiness and obvious life wisdom ( like on her trip to Phuket after the tsunami ). The movie ends exactly as I imagined at the very beginning. Beautiful images, even well acted, and the digital erasure of the arm looks convincing, but it's a movie that gives you a toothache from start to finish. More for the youth.

Shame.

It's a shame that if a biography falls into the wrong hands, it can go wrong. Soul Surfer is a typical example of a biography that, despite the true story, I can't take seriously as a biography or as a drama.

McNamara made almost no effort to make it somehow believable or gripping, or at least, but a number of scenes succeed. The rest is very good, too good for something like this actually.

Robb is always nice to see, and acts well, but her role is very limited so she does not excel. Quaid also seems to be just an excuse for starpower, and I didn't even recognize Hunt anymore. A few other more famous headlines, but they are quite short.

The film is somewhat comparable to the films of Doug Campbell, if anyone is already familiar with that. Pro-American, way too sweet and of course with an exaggerated ending. It's all too much of a good thing. The drama is short and doesn't come in, it doesn't have any impact.

The shark scene was short enough to be really impressed. A few quick shots of her stomp don't add value. What does keep the film up a bit are the surf scenes, with some spectacular underwater images of the blue ocean.

Location is as expected also completely in order, although I thought the final match was stupid and clumsy. Everyone does the same, but Hamilton and Birch sometimes get a 9 while the rest dangle between 5 and 7. Strange.

Also, that American thing of the "ideal life before the incident" just wasn't right. It is especially the images on the water that are fun, and then it is sometimes oppressively filmed with 1 arm Robb on the surfboard. That is well done again.

Not successful as a bio/drama, perhaps more as a sports film. Could have done more with it, much more.
