"Anything can happen during the dog days of summer. On August 22nd, 1972, everything did."

Brooklyn, New York, August 22, 1972. Just before noon, Sonny and Sal rob a bank. The robbery was not allowed to last longer than ten minutes, but there is not enough money in the safe and the police are at the door faster than expected, so that the mobsters are locked in with their hostages. In the following hours a veritable war of nerves erupts. In the meantime, the press has also arrived and dozens of spectators are crowding in front of the bank building.

Incredibly good movie! It is exciting from start to finish, but above all it is realistic and human: the criminals turn out to be 'real' people, who evoke sympathy as such, and many of the situations in which they find themselves in the botched bank robbery are downright hilarious. The bank robbery is so real than the slick versions you usually see in movies and at the same time the film emphasizes how such a bank robbery is a sensational media event in which everyone feels like a star for a while.

Not hugely impressed. In the first place, the running time of 120 minutes feels quite long, too long for the story being told. Director Sydney Lumet mainly focuses on the banal and even dull reality of a robbery/hostage situation; a choice that gives the film semi-realistic proportions, but also makes it dry. The role of the police and the crowd around the bank is never really worked out in depth, neither is the role of fellow robber Sal, so that only Pacino's character has a certain layering. The second hour, however, is better than the first; the character Sonny is explored quite well in this hour through some figures from his life, and Pacino gets a lot of space here to put humanity in his character and deliver a strong performance. The contrast between the consecutive telephone conversations with his 'wife' and his wife in terms of attitude and facial expression is very strong acting by Pacino. The last ten minutes can even be called quite exciting, although it is not surprising that the film ends quickly and anti-climactic. True to life, that's how it really feels. John Cazale in one of his few rolls of film outside of The Godfather by the way; he puts the taciturn Sal down just fine. He radiates a subtle yet deep sadness, but unfortunately he doesn't get the space to really impress. Too bad he didn't get to play in more movies. 3*.

Beautiful film about a bank robbery that ends in a hostage situation and quickly gets out of hand. Based on a real event and it is all quite realistically portrayed. The tension is also held fairly well, although there is also room for humor. The hostages, hostage takers, police, media and the public are all covered here. Al Pacino is excellent in the lead role.
