Urban Explorer plot

A group of four researchers hires local guide Kris because they are curious about what lies beneath the city of Berlin. They pass through all kinds of tunnels under the city, but when the guide makes an unfortunate fall, two of them go looking for help. Denis, a young American, stays behind and Armin, a former German border controller, appears out of nowhere. In desperation, Denis allows him to lead them back to civilization, but this turns out to be a bad choice.

Good.

A typical genre film, but then again, not. Fetscher plays with clichés and frequently comes up with something original. Probably a bit too subtle for non-genre fans, but he repeatedly plays with familiar horror clichés (although the film largely follows the established path).

A mix between The Tunnel and Creep. The film benefits from a cool location and a great villain. Fetscher is also a gifted director for this kind of work; the Ratatatata moment is one of the best I've seen in a horror film this year.

A perfect horror interlude. It lacks just a bit of impact to earn a truly high score, but it's perfectly entertaining and manages to surprise you every now and then.

3.5*

I actually thought this was a pretty good horror/thriller that kept me captivated until the very end and was even occasionally suspenseful. The story (which really picks up after about 30 minutes) may not be original (e.g., "Creep (2004)"), but despite that, I thought the execution was successful, and the atmosphere was delightfully creepy and oppressive. It also gets a bit crude at times, and Klaus Stiglmeier (he had a great face; he reminded me of James Coburn) plays the role of the deranged former German border guard brilliantly and convincingly. I even laughed when he started telling his story about the Mujahideen. The rest of the cast did a commendable job, by the way.

The film does contain a few clichés here and there, but without them, it couldn't be made in this version. At barely 90 minutes, the film isn't long and is therefore a joy to watch. I also found the ending very successful. All in all, I really enjoyed this film and found it a very enjoyable horror/thriller.

PS, Nathalie Kelley was a beautiful girl by the way.

Claustrophobic cat-and-mouse game.

Urban Explorer is unexpectedly entertaining. This German horror film thrives on the claustrophobic exploration of Berlin's tunnels. But the film's second half, in which a gruesome game of cat and mouse is played with a smirking Max Riemelt, also manages to occasionally induce goosebumps.

Good.
