A large passenger ship travels from Vera Cruz to Bremerhaven around 1937. On board is a colorful group of guests. A young woman is interested in this diverse group and is also traveling with her lover. There are also the ship's doctor, the Spanish political activist, a philosophical Jew and a group of anti-Hitler people.

Michael Dunn, Simone Signoret (naturally), and Oskar Werner save this lengthy film from total ruin. It's a pretentious film with a motley collection of rather trivial stories about bickering, barely interesting people. Vivien Leigh's last film. A real shame, because her glorious career deserves a more fitting conclusion.

A decent film about a boat full of passengers from all walks of life bound for Germany during the interwar period. It takes a while to really get going, but afterward, there are certainly some good scenes and dialogue. However, the film is too long and a bit tedious.
