Day the World Ended plot

"ATTACKED... by a creature from hell!"

Around 1975, our world is devastated by a nuclear war. A number of people survive the disaster and accidentally meet at the house of Jim Maddison and his daughter Louise in a sheltered valley in the mountains. And so engineer Rick, the thief Tony, his girlfriend and stripper Ruby, the old prospector Pete and the injured Radek must try to survive together. But this does not always go well and tensions between these people regularly run high. And if that weren't enough, menacing eyes lurk outside.

An early Corman sham filmed in nine days, it turns out to be quite entertaining. Hilarious actors seem to be reading rather than acting, monsters constructed from papier-mâché, and idiotic theories about the post-nuclear world.

It's all a bit much for me. So the enjoyment depends largely on whether you can recognize the humor of that typical 50s B-movie. I had a good day, it didn't last too long, and I still enjoyed myself reasonably well.

With Mike Connors aka Mannix, who plays the "bad guy" here. The monster does indeed look very fake, and the seven people in the house look equally neatly dressed and clean throughout the film, even though they're living in a post-nuclear world. But the sultry atmosphere and occasionally creepy music do create some ambiance.

A nice attempt that, however, comes across as far from credible because it is all too amateurish. The interaction between the characters is still of an acceptable level, but otherwise there is little to enjoy in terms of tension, and once the monster comes into full view it becomes unintentionally funny.

How the woman communicates with the creatures is not explained anywhere.
