Comedy that mainly thrives on mild slapstick. At times I really thought I had ended up in a Benny Hill episode. The script also stretches over a running time of 2 hours, to complete the circle of injustice and revenge - the serious part of the film.
It will be no coincidence that Cable Hogue comes to his end by being run over in a laughable manner by a modern automobile. Not hard to see a symbolic comic end of the Old West in it, an important theme for Peckinpah, and yet also a form of self-mockery?

All in all still entertaining but not exactly a top game. I agree with the comments here that the landscapes are beautiful. The soundtrack is also quite good.

Nice.

A nice casual story that explains a part of the history of the wild west, but without it ever really coming across that way. Robards, who I think I only know from his role in OUATITW, could almost have walked out of that film. Not Stella Stevens, despite the fact that she has played in 76 films, this is the first one I see.

For Peckinpah it is perhaps a somewhat unremarkable film, but not less good for that. And a very strong ending too, the symbolism is bursting from it.

Sunday night classic night brought this The Ballad of Cable Hogue, and with it a film by director Peckinpah with Jason Robards as the most famous face. And that Peckinpah as a director for me usually means miss or hit was proven once again.

And the synopsis is clear enough around Hogue left in the desert who then finds his piece of paradise and the peace that comes with it to do things differently. No more bandit life for Hogue but peace and to a certain extent a home, a car and an animal with everything that is yet to follow. But of course that has its fair share of difficulties with people who drift in as they please, some with good intentions and others with lesser ones. In addition, the focus is mainly on the slow life, adventuring in the sense of surviving on the gums and making ends meet on little, and just like the bicycle in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, at some point we also have an invention of the 20th century that will change times forever.

And with that The Ballad of Cable Hogue gives a slow but no less true picture of the wild west and how it once was, in terms of survival and few opportunities, the vastness and a hard time. As already said, an image that is no less true but very different from cowboys and their pief paf poef. In addition, a touch of drama, romance and humor is added to the whole that can count on decent figures. But to be honest, I don't give a damn about it, although in the case of How The West Was Won I did like a similar story. Still, I find this boring, little happens and I still long for a western like The Magnificent Seven. Anyway, this was not my cup of coffee, so then a pass for the effort, but especially quickly on to the next film.
