Extremely atmospheric.

Wingard knows how to maintain and release tension for a long time in an extremely effective way. Not your standard serial killer horror - even though there are some solid kills with modest gore - it's best viewed as a portrait and a look inside the mind. In terms of tension build-up, it is somewhat comparable to Blue Ruin, although the content is significantly different.

Bowen (who plays a great role) remains at a distance for a long time, and as a viewer you try to reconcile his hobbyist activities with the loving relationship he seems to maintain at the same time. It is that uncertainty that is the breeding ground for a lot of tension and unpredictability because you don't know exactly what he is thinking, feeling or what his motives are. It's great how that is retained (and fulfilled) by Wingard.

Audiovisually very effective, although the much-mentioned shake cam and exaggerated play with blur is unusual enough to take you out of the film in time. Still, it manages to convey a certain disturbing atmosphere, so you can hardly call it redundant. It's a trick, but one that works.

The denouement may be a bit far-fetched, but the actors manage to convey it believably and the ultimate ending is simply strong. Nice to finally reward Wingard with a 4* again.

That was a long time ago...

Story-wise complicated due to the many jumping through time, but nicely done and I can also appreciate the ending a lot better than the first time. It all looks good, great soundtrack too, but... this time I couldn't work with just one actor; amateurish and empty. And that is of course detrimental to the experience.

2.5*.
