Daydream Nation plot
Caroline Wexler, 17, is a witty, sexy and very intelligent girl. She soon realizes that she doesn't have much in common with the rural folk who attend her new school. She starts a relationship with the only person she gets along with: her handsome young teacher Mr. Anderson. However, that relationship does not go smoothly when she realizes that Mr. Anderson is deeply haunted by his mysterious past. When she breaks up with him in favor of a classmate, Mr. Anderson does everything he can to sabotage the budding romance. And then there are the rumors of a serial killer making the neighborhood unsafe.

I found it a rather chaotic film.
The film showed absolutely fascinating things.
However, in my opinion, this film was somewhat strangely structured.
The story didn't strike me as very impressive.

A nice film about a student who starts a relationship with both her teacher and a classmate. The film has a somewhat dreamy atmosphere (which naturally fits the title nicely). This otherwise pleasant atmosphere does come at the expense of the story, however, which is simply a bit too packed and also seems somewhat sloppily edited.

In many romantic comedies, the characters are sketched in a one-dimensional way. They often possess little more than a likeable appearance. The consequence of this is that such a character quickly fades into oblivion after the film ends. Often, I couldn't care less whether or not such a character finds romantic happiness. In Daydream Nation by director and writer Michael Goldbach, things are different. His characters have more dimensions. His characters possess multiple character traits. They are layered. The characters in Daydream Nation even possess traits that do not necessarily make them likeable.
Interesting characters. Protagonist Carolin (Kat Dennings) is particularly so. An older teenager who has just arrived in a small American town to finish high school. A beautiful woman who has mastered the art of seduction and displays erratic behavior in the process. The script aligns well with this. The storyline is likewise jumpy. Director and writer Michael Goldbach does not present a chronological narrative but a story that unfolds on different time levels. Daydream Nation is a film that defies conventions in another respect as well. The film touches upon various film genres. At one moment, the film appears to be a comedy. Then a tragedy. And then a thriller.
What isn't jumpy about the film is a constant, almost apocalyptic-looking atmosphere that hangs over the events. Things play out on the sidelines that aren't directly relevant to the story, but weigh heavily on the atmosphere. A burning industrial complex. A serial killer. Fascinating. And then there is Carolin, navigating through all the commotion and doing her own thing without caring about the consequences of her actions. A character with quirks and flawed behavior. Not necessarily a likeable figure. But damn attractive. And damn fascinating. Just like the film is.
