Jezus Is een Palestijn plot
Ramses (Hans Teeuwen) is a silly twenty-something who has been living in a commune in Limburg for eight years. Pierced from head to toe with piercings and clad in a formless robe, he is there occupied with the teachings of Kahn Guru. Just before his rather painful (genital) initiation, his sister Natasha (Van Kooten) appears on the scene with the news that their father (Mascini) is dying in Amsterdam. Together they go to the capital where Ramses becomes acquainted with the female sex and with a Palestinian prophet in the Bijlmer who has arranged the roof of his flat as a landing place for the Messiah.

It's funny how something is very fixed in your head, but it turns out not to be the case. For example, I remembered from this movie that there was a line in it that said "Ramses has gone into permanent astral projection." But that quote turns out to be slightly different, and not about Ramses.
In addition, I remembered very little, and it was certainly worthwhile to watch this quite special film again. Because there are a lot of absurd situations and bad humor - enough to make you laugh, plus the somewhat nostalgic look back at the Dutch theater, TV and film world of the late 1990s. Najib Amhali perhaps gives the strongest role, but of course his character also demands that.
With a few obvious exceptions, and not very much considering the not very good production values, this is one of the best Dutch films of the past who knows how many years. And certainly one of the better films about the year 2000 and the impending end of existence that some expected.

And so you could still see that the Netherlands could still take a beating in 1999, and that you could also see these types of films in the cinema. 
Fortunately, this is something different from that forced stuff on Dutch soil. What a beautiful and, above all, society-devouring comedy. The funny thing is that Hans Teeuwen remains quite good here for a change compared to how he is on stage. Here he plays some cult member in a Limburg village that is 400 years behind the times. Although 400 years... the rings and piercings must beckon to modern times. One day he is forced to be picked up by his sister Natasja (very nicely portrayed by the tough Kim van Kooten), with the announcement that his father is dying. He has to go to Amsterdam. (His pig also comes along) And in addition to the tragedy about his father, this brings a lot of bizarre adventures.
And it is almost bizarre with a B. What an absurd and wonderfully wrong work Crijns has made of his debut. The dialogues are truly hilarious and the nonsense manages to come across as serious. The humor is sharp and subtle and the themes are completely contemporary. That Jesus figure in the Bijlmer and especially his worshipers are also very wrong. Also a nice reference to The Bijlmer Disaster towards the end. 
Wonderful and completely wrong homegrown film. Creative, cynical and crazy!

The fact that I came across this now is separate from current events in the Middle East, but the link is of course there: it is even briefly discussed in this film.
I had never seen this one before. Just good and stupid humor, although I expected something more from Hans Teeuwen. The millennium year, the Bijlmer disaster, Maharishi (lived in Limburg).... you name it or it is in this film and it is made fun of. Filmed almost 25 years ago and it comes across as 50 years ago. Beautiful pictures, also of Amsterdam. I don't really care about acting in these types of films. Typically Dutch, in any case.
