Reasonable Hui.

Although it is a bit too cliché in terms of romance at times. The vicissitudes between the characters are very thick and it is all brought with a strong dash of drama. But that was also somewhere within expectations, because Hui is more guilty of that.

Visually, it's pretty decent. Nice monochrome filter over it, but it still lags behind its genre and compatriots. Although, looking at the year, it could certainly have been a lot worse. Soundtrack is fairly classic, so many Chinese sounds, it also ensures that the audiovisual tastes good.

Acting is pretty good too. Anita Mui is a certainty, Lai is a somewhat easy choice but understandable, in the end it was You Ge that appealed to me the most. Yet an actor who always stands out in the film in which he takes part.

Reasonably romantic drama, not bad for a Hui film, but I'm not a big fan of her work anyway. It is rarely really good, it lacks a bit of its own stamp and it is often too strikingly dramatic.

After seeing the biopic Anita (2021) I went looking for films with Anita Mui. Although she does not play the leading role in this film, she does play an important supporting role as the degenerate, older sister of the main character. It is a drama set in pre-war Shanghai. The love story, which suffers from class differences, is a dime a dozen, but the decoration of the film and the acting (particularly by the frail Chien-Lien Wu) make for an entertaining whole.
