The Prodigies plot

Five young teens are violently assaulted in New York City's Central Park. However, they are not normal teenagers, they are child prodigies. Their trauma causes these five brilliant minds to grow cold-blooded and come up with a perfect revenge plan. The only person aware of the impending doom is Jimbo Farrar, a sixth child prodigy. There is hope for the world as he fights the five, but should he defect to their side, it will only be a matter of time before a catastrophe of mysterious magnitude ensues...

The characters are beautifully brought to life. Thanks to the use of Motion Capture, you sometimes have to look twice to realize that The Prodigies is really an animated film. It is a pity that the entourage is in most cases rather clumsy, poorly detailed and lifeless. The packaging in which the characters move is, with the exception of a few scenes, devoid of soul and charm. I am not really into animation, but when it happens I like to see such a film dressed with an eye for detail and visually interesting. If that is not the case, the content can of course make up for a lot.

The content is rather meager, however. The film turns out to be a kind of revenge thriller, but does so without much motivation. The Prodigies places a group of superior children centrally and lets them be angry at the world. In doing so, hardly any attention is paid to a character sketch. The characters are designed flatly. Their background is painted with some rough brush strokes. These are no more than rough beginnings that arouse curiosity. It is too little to achieve that a bond is built with them. Watching a number of nice action scenes is therefore a clinical activity that amuses but does not release any empathetic feelings for the characters.

In the story a few nice satirical stitches about reality TV and the power of money. They come alive for a while and quickly fall back. The film is random and fleeting. I was charmed in advance by the idea of children with mental superpowers. A very nice plot. However, the execution is rather superficial. So somewhat disappointed. The fact that the film never explores its characters in depth is a bloodletting. It makes you watch the film with a distance and a shrug of the shoulders. The Prodigies is fun to watch but is ultimately no more than average.
