Crack in the World (1965)

A decent film about a scientist who wants to break through the Earth's crust to obtain energy. This sci-fi/disaster movie gets off to a somewhat slow start and certainly doesn't rely on credibility. The outdated special effects definitely have their charm. A solid 3.0 stars for this entertaining pulp, which is otherwise easy to watch.

A decent sci-fi film about disasters caused by cracks in the Earth's crust resulting from experiments by scientists.

Halfway through, I thought that this story had been an excellent starting point for Emmerich's 2012 film.

The effects are naturally mediocre, with real volcano scenes and atomic explosions edited in between.

Otherwise, this is a mediocre disaster movie with a truly mediocre ending.

A little tip: if you're making a film where the Earth tears in two, make sure you have a decent budget. This mainly features CGI from that era: stock footage. Furthermore, it's mostly just them fighting in their lab. We should have expected something better by 1965. This is actually something you would expect more in the 1950s. The idea is nice, we briefly go into a volcano, and okay, the train was actually done quite well, but otherwise it's cut-and-paste work with newsreel footage, volcanic eruptions, and atomic explosions. Naturally, at least half an hour is also spent on romantic entanglements.
