Very slow and boring story. I did my best to persevere, but this film really didn't captivate me.

Gray medium.

It is mainly wooden boy Sam Claflin who gets in the way of the story. He lacks any charisma and acts so woodenly that perhaps there would not have been any chemistry with any other co-star than Rachel Weisz. I'm okay with Weisz herself, I can always have her.

Otherwise typical costume drama, they always look decent in terms of decoration. That is also the case here, without question. They also played it safe for the soundtrack. Everything stands or falls in this type of drama with the leading actors and whether the viewer can lose himself in that psychological game. I mostly lost myself in annoyance about Claflin.

2.5

Unremarkable costume drama with, strangely enough, the title role of Rachel Weisz as the weakest link. The film starts well and is intriguing and mysterious, until she makes her appearance. Weisz is miscast, but it's not just her performance. Her character is simply written and developed too flatly. The film is worth watching and director Roger Michell makes a valiant attempt to constantly mislead the viewer, but the script is a bit too transparent and predictable.
