At the time, this British film was not only lauded with Bafta awards, but also successful in Cannes, Berlin and at the Golden Globe Awards.
Typical British humour in words and images, sometimes very successful, sometimes rather weak, especially since after almost 50 years, some things have been undermined by the ravages of time.
At the time, Michael Crawford must have seemed surprising and refreshing, while now everyone still remembers him one-sidedly from series like "Some Mothers have them...".
All in all a doable picture.
"The Knack..." also deliberately pokes fun at social life in the London metropolis (the chatter, the indifference of the man in the street, including the police, the frivolity...).

A somewhat strange black-and-white comedy starring Michael Crawford, best known as the impossible bungler Frank Spencer in the Mother's Finest comedy series.

Seventeen years ago, I stated here that this film clearly hasn't survived the zeitgeist. After my second viewing, I still feel that way, with the caveat that it does offer a beautiful reflection of the times. The dawn of the permissive society, free love and free sex—anything was allowed. Meanwhile, the struggles of the young men (and the young woman) with their feelings and desires—whether or not they were pressured by their surroundings—are timeless.
Some jokes are still pretty good. Some parts are absolutely...
The comments from passers-by are funny, the lack of commentary when it comes to 'rape' is food for thought.
I saw a resemblance between Rita Tushingham and the young Anne van Egmond.
