Maybe I wasn't in the right mood for a Troma, but I didn't enjoy Nuke 'em High that much, while the film clearly has a lot of things in its favor. For example, the soundtrack is really wonderfully 80's, the setting is a no-brainer and the plot is promising. Still, I found the film really dragging in the middle and the humor didn't always work that well. The biggest annoyance was the particularly noisy ending. The screaming in combination with the soundtrack worked like a cacophony of sound. Too bad, because I found the monster convincing. It must have been my mood. Maybe a rewatch will do wonders in the future.

I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Maybe because there were a lot of mild reactions, or because the story is very similar to The Toxic Avenger and that would not be surpassed. But Kaufman again fills his film with fringe morons and crap that will make Troma novices run away, but the fans will be entertained. And that's what you're an indie studio for.

The 80s atmosphere is perfectly taken care of. Tromaville High School life is enjoyable with lots of sex, drugs and gangs. The clothing style was already different in the eighties but according to Troma standards it is all a bit thickened with make-up, very strange haircuts and big nose rings. There is something seriously wrong with most of the characters. As a result, some are very nice or funny, and others are annoying or completely miss the mark. As is often the case with Troma; hilarious on the one hand, incredibly childish on the other. The wonderful soundtrack certainly contributes to the general atmosphere so that the film does not get boring.

You might wonder why Kaufman doesn't come up with something new like toxic waste. Maybe because there were some props left over from Toxie? It's not original, but the execution is optimal. The green goo flies around again, body parts are pumped up and heads are pulverized. Everything is handmade of course. Not realistic, but convincing. The monster design is genius, despite the fact that the suit was not finished - and manages to make more of an impression than Toxie, although the latter is of course good-natured.

Very nice Troma so again not to compare itself to Toxie, but just that little bit short to dethrone him. The chance that people who are not familiar with Troma will like this is not very big, but if you still want to try it; please, but keep your expectations low and enjoy low-budget nonsense.

Directors Richard W. Haines and Lloyd Kaufman deliver a film that mainly focuses on eccentric characters and far-fetched concepts. The opening is fortunately spot on to make a big impression, but after that the film quickly descends into dullness and the clumsy visual aspect can no longer compensate. It doesn't help that Troma films always have to come up with rather substandard and bad acting, which means that a lot of strongly exaggerated characters just don't come into their own. The practical effects are fortunately considerably more charming and fit perfectly with the environment that Haines and Kaufman want to build, but they are unfortunately limited to a minimum. Since the comedy content doesn't really work, almost the entire middle section is interchangeable, but the final phase, on the other hand, is remarkably spectacular and funny.
