tasteless.

Film seems to be a kind of reaction to the internet hype of years ago where bums were murdered or had to commit atrocities. It seems as if we have entered this crazy internet world.

Hauer puts down a good oboe, the rest of the town is obviously very over-the-top and unrealistic, but that's exactly the point.

What particularly bothered me about the film is that at a certain point it all got very gore, some parts literally made me look away from the TV, not scary, not funny, just disgust: tasteless. The humor sometimes praised above didn't appeal to me either.

What remains then is a film with good gore and good hauer, which evokes no emotion in me except disgust.

2*

revised.

Hobo with a Shotgun was a movie I used to really look forward to, and when I actually saw the movie it was actually disappointing. I still think that there isn't really a strong flow through the film. It's a film that immediately appeals to audiences that like gory and crazy movies without much structure, and it succeeds in that.

Almost everything in the film is framed by rudeness, insanity, and madness. I don't think there is a normal character walking around in this movie. Hauer still comes close to someone who is normal, but in the end his appearance is also a kind of cartoon character. All that noise makes for some great characters (Slick & Ivan, Rip & Grinder) and some less fun ones (The Hobo, The Drake).

Visually it doesn't always look good. Sometimes Eisener aims a little too easy. Just because your movie is an ode to the 80s doesn't mean some scenes have to look ugly. This changed in the second half, which can put down some better sets with nicer colors and nice scenes. It also helps that the film is so loud that it's hard not to look up at what's happening next.

What the film does very well is showing downright excessive violence. Eisener bullets his way through his story with huge amounts of blood. That story doesn't have much to say about content, but the large amount of violence, brutal scenes and disturbed appearances more than compensate for this.

I thought about the film for a long time, and came to the conclusion that I liked it a lot better than the first time. Much better even. It's a bit of a shame that there is never a good flow involved and that the main strength comes from the madness and not from the direction, but otherwise a nice clunky, entertaining and extremely violent film that I was never bored with.
