Just a very good film with an intelligent script about cultural differences, prejudices, integration, hypocrisy and sincere love. The excellent acting, the richly varied soundtrack, the beautiful camera work (especially in Istanbul) and a few nice ideas from the writer/director (integration via the fanfare band, the final scene in the launderette) ensure a pleasant end result. Afterwards I had to think back with a smile on the opposite reactions of her mother and his mother to the love affair. A heavenly difference. Well done, Balci, I think. You can surprise me even more.

Solid Flemish film about a love affair of different cultures. By each in turn feeling like the odd one out, they largely keep their relationship a secret from their families. This decision weighs on their relationship. The confrontation and reaction with the Belgian mama about music was therefore harsh, although this was laughed off or minimized. The film mainly takes place in the period before the presentation to the in-laws, as a result of which Balci has made a certain choice.
Well acted, fast paced and enjoyable to follow. The script was perhaps a little over-directed with its contradictions and hypocrisy, but that takes away from the fact that it's a fun movie overall. The focus was placed a little too much on the Turkish family, but that doesn't matter.

Film about a second generation Turkish boy in Belgium. At first it seems like a predictable film about cultural differences. Not really special but not bad either. It's not until two thirds of the film that some deeper layers start to come into the story and it also becomes a bit more personal. Even if it sometimes comes across as a bit forced and a lot happens towards the end. But it does make the movie better. It is also important that the film has a sympathetic appearance. So a good enough.
