In the revision!

Once an artistically respected director, director Ken Russell's career disappeared between the B-horror films.

Good news for the more artistic fanatics because it has produced a large pile of films that deviate from the standard.

At times full-out Russell style again and a version of a Bram Stoker story about the legend of a mythical snake, moved to the present.

Amanda Donohoe is great in this movie.

It entertains.

Especially when the film doesn't really take itself seriously and the more typical Russell moments emerge. Not that I have seen much of the great man, but he still has a certain image that this film conveys. In other words, not for people who like to watch normal horror.

Apart from the somewhat crazy scenes, it is a rather mediocre film. Really bad acting, not really great visually and not exactly scary in terms of atmosphere. Fortunately, Russell aims more for lightheartedness with this film. The piece of folklore (with music and drama) at the beginning of the film sets the tone.

The last half hour is quite entertaining, but the film doesn't really get going. And if Russell does try, it really becomes too ugly for words. Like you're watching an early 90s rave clip. Too bad, because other special effects were quite reasonable. A very young Hugh Grant is a bonus, fortunately the film is not boring either.

Nice to have seen. Not great, but entertaining.

2.5*

Wrong camp spiced up with some trademark Ken Russell weirdness. The crazy dream sequences are really enjoyable, although Russell could have used a little extra speed during some scenes. When the plot comes more to the fore, it becomes less and less and the clumsiness of the film starts to become more noticeable. As a whole it can't match Altered States, but there is at least enough craziness and hilarity present (that bagpipe scene too ) for a big 3*.
