Carroll Aiken is a young, idealistic and driven lawyer. However, Carroll's colleague Barry Conant is more of a cynical lawyer. Despite their ethical differences, the two team up to defend the downtrodden Gracie Clay. Gracie is accused of murdering her sadistic father Matt Clay. The haughty Conant accuses the jury of prejudice against the poor, but this strategy fails miserably. The tenacious Carroll feels compelled to apologize to the court in order to try and win Gracie's case.
