Der Räuber plot
Johann Rettenberger is a marathon runner, but he also robs banks. He lives, undiscovered, with his girlfriend Erika in Vienna. However, he becomes more and more addicted to the robberies. A bank robber is released from prison, but almost immediately starts robbing again. The film is made cool and distant. But that suits the main character very well. Indeed, that is also the case. A mysterious man who is only guessing at his motivations for his behavior. Besides being a bank robber, he is also a fanatical runner. And while the story is straightforward and barely digs into his psyche, it is a compelling film. At one point his girlfriend asks, why she is his girlfriend is just as mysterious, why he still commits those bank robberies.
His answer is that he dreams that he is already dead, but he is so full of energy that he comes back to life every time.
That is a very fascinating answer and at the same time explains a lot about the film. A detached, sober and unemotional film with a predictable course, but nevertheless fascinating.
