Die Frau mit den 5 Elefanten plot
Documentary portrait of 86-year-old Svetlana Geier, originally from Ukraine, who devotes her life to translating Russian literature into German. To pay off, as she herself says, her debt to Germany - a debt she inflicted on herself during the Second World War. For the past twenty years she has focused on Dostoevsky's five great novels - 'the five elephants'. In contrast to her meticulous intellectual work, which she performs together with a number of retired friends, the film Geiers everyday activities in and around the house: peeling apples, making tea and receiving the children and grandchildren. When she is invited for a guest lecture in Kiev, she returns to her native soil for the first time in sixty-five years.
