Delicious.

Mortier is just not quite there yet, but just a little while and he can stand next to names like Noé and Grandrieux as far as I'm concerned. 22 May is a wonderfully bitter and gray film that still resonates nicely when the credits thunder across the screen.

Although not really narrative-oriented and fairly abstract, the film remains easy and fast to follow. It is in any case very clear which way Mortier wants to go with this film.

Beautiful locations and deadly characters are at the heart of Mortier's film (and style too), with a great soundtrack to enhance the mood. Most scenes are therefore to be framed. Acting also very strong (including the juicy dialects - subs wouldn't have looked out of place), especially Sam and Titus play the tiles of the roof.

I can do this. Cinema with balls, its own style and no convention. And also fantastically great. Shouldn't be ashamed to stand between other international class films. More please.

4.5* and an extensive review

Second Mortar.

I liked his earlier film a bit better, but that doesn't take away from the fact that May 22 has a platform to stand on. It was a very successful film especially in the first 30 minutes, and in that you can recognize a director who really cares about his film. We certainly get enough atmosphere and dark images presented that way.

May 22nd is not the usual film being made in the field of terrorism. Still, I get the feeling that they didn't quite know what they were doing while writing it, because there's a lot of misplaced sentiment in it. So much that it gets in the way of the atmosphere. When it comes to showing real emotion for these names, the film suddenly drops dead.

Furthermore, the emphasis is placed on all kinds of themes such as guilt and loss. It manages to work nicely in the beginning, but then starts to repeat itself a bit. The main problem is that the sentiment itself does not want to catch on in combination with this style, of which the second can be called quite brilliant. Very nice sound, strong cinematography and nice filters. It sometimes overflows with appropriate atmosphere.

Still, it was difficult for me to get through the middle part, but that doesn't take away from the fact that it is an intriguing and atmospheric film. Perhaps Mortier could do better with a slightly more catchy story, because I didn't get the feeling that this narrative and this stylization were really good friends. The first half hour is strong, as is the finale, but the rest of the film can't compete with that level.
