The year is 1925. A teacher from a small religious village is arrested for teaching his students about Charles Darwin's theories of evolution. The accuser is politician Matthew Harrison Brady. Henry Drummond, determined to warn the townspeople of their God-fearing demeanor, takes over the defense.
