Neither the humor nor the drama really shines, and while the first hour isn't particularly captivating, it's not really bad either. The last half hour, with a few spectacular action scenes, more than makes up for it. Just shy of 3 stars. Typical of the kind of film you see as an outsider in a box set.

Very moderate.

The three film brothers united, but this is actually Fruit Chan's debut. Therefore, it's probably not surprising that it turned out more of a drama than a true action film.

Clearly a hastily made film. Hung has already shown better work as a director (especially in the action department), but for Fruit Chan, I think it's mainly a matter of getting used to things and learning. Despite the attempt to inject more drama, it doesn't work at all. Chan and Hung act like wet rags. Typical HK action overacting, which isn't bothersome when Chan is acting in his typical action/comedy vehicles, but in a drama, it's detrimental.

The action itself isn't particularly high-quality. The opening scene is rather weak, though thankfully the final scene is somewhat better. But you still have to wait quite a while for it, even though the film clocks in at around 90 minutes.

No, a lot of familiar names, but the result is hardly memorable. The two worlds colliding here just don't mesh very well, especially not in the '80s.

2.0*

Revisited in 4K from 88Films with Dolby Vision. Formerly known on VHS as First Mission. There's the 91-minute Hong Kong Cut and the longer 99-minute Japanese Cut, which includes two added action scenes for Japanese fans.

Police officer Jackie must give up his dream career of becoming a merchant seaman and traveling the world to care for his mentally disabled brother, Sammo. But everything changes when his brother accidentally comes into possession of a bag of stolen jewelry and is kidnapped by a gang leader who uses him as leverage. Jackie risks not only his job but also his life to free his brother.

A primarily serious film, it focuses more on the drama aspect. The story is somewhat comparable to Rain Man, which came out three years later and may have drawn inspiration from it. Sammo, who constantly gets into trouble and is even exploited, is endearing. He's a constant source of stress for his brother Jackie, who always has to take care of him. Jackie is also torn between the desire to make his girlfriend happy and his dream of becoming a merchant seaman. This results in several heartbreaking scenes between the Peking Opera Brothers.

Towards the finale, the film shifts to action in the apartment building under construction, and we're treated to a brutal fight against Taiwanese actor Dick Wei. A masterpiece of choreography, editing, and lighting.
