a tragicomedy with multi-talented John C. Reilly, Tomei and Hill in the lead roles, then you would expect a topper. Unfortunately, Cyrus didn't become that, although I think it had the ambition. Often such films are about a small-scale story that is recognizable and that fragility provides suspense and compassion for the characters. Unfortunately, the story used for this is not really well translated to the silver screen. The film was just a little too unsure of what it wanted to be and despite the very strong work of the actors, I think it could have been even more if they had worked out the main part of the story (new relationship for mom after 22 years) better instead of of the 'duel' between son and new man. Either you go for the consequences of that new relationship, or you make a crazy comedy in which Reilly and Hill can let themselves go, or you make sure that what they have written down was better developed. Camera work was very rough but suited it nicely, dialogues flowing into unspoken glances were a nice find, also thanks to the chemistry of the cast that was certainly there. At the end, the film goes off the clichés again and that's a shame.

Cyrus survives thanks to the 3 main actors, some nice humorous moments and a nicely adapted visual working method. But there could have been a lot more

Reilly excels as John, a single man in his forties who struggles to build a new relationship after his divorce from Jamie [Catherine Keener]. Thanks to Jamie, he meets Molly [Marisa Tomei] at a party, with whom it turns out that things click wonderfully quickly and well. But Molly has a son, 21-year-old Cyrus [Jonah Hill], with whom she is very close. Cyrus sees John as a threat and subtly tries to sabotage the relationship. While the basics aren't particularly original, the characters are authentic, and the chemistry between Reilly, Tomei, and Hill ensures that the focus is never slack in a romantic drama with a subtle, sometimes bittersweet sense of humour. The acquaintance between John and Cyrus is sublimely acted, with Cyrus' musical performance as the highlight.

Nice.

Surprising video. Dry and quick. Especially the first hour. The cast does a brilliant job. The dynamic between John C. Reilly and Jonah Hill is certainly great. The scene with Hill at the synthesizer is great. Nice, slightly weird humor. That actually goes on for an hour and although it is all quite predictable, it is quite a pity that the final chord goes a bit too emphatically in the drama side. A movie like this definitely doesn't need that. It's a shame, but it doesn't detract from the quality of the first hour.

3.5
