Perhaps Welles' most difficult film to get into. Even when this director goes for documentary you can expect to see something you've never seen before and I bet it won't be imitated anytime soon. It's a big game between what's real and fake and Welles' argument seems to be that a charlatan and an artist are probably the same and that it can best be compared to magic (and with that I'm summarizing it bluntly and irreverently). F For Fake is in any case a very special work.

”What we professional liars hope to serve is truth. I'm afraid the pompous word for that is "art".”

A nice idiosyncratic documentary, the likes of which you will not encounter very often. Welles plays with the viewer here and juggles, sometimes literally, with the truth and the lies. I am not really interested in art, but here it has something fascinating. Especially the question of why a forgery would not be worth that much, if for example it is painted exactly like a real Picasso, is certainly one to think about. Welles is prominently featured here and clearly enjoyed the making this documentary.

Especially the way F for Fake is shot is very varied. The last minutes don't really come as a surprise. It may not be as profound as other films by Welles, but it is mainly the fun factor that Welles uses this time knows how to collect his points.

3.5*

No, not my taste at all. Nice idea but too much whining in the margins and visually not particularly interesting. I really can't say much more about it. This thing is not necessarily bad (that's why the lowest score feels a bit too heavy to me) but I really didn't like it. Welles does have a nice narrator's voice, too bad what he said didn't interest me. 1.0*.
