Tough Caribbean cargo captain Sam Whelan hires Sally Clark, a drifter disguised as a missionary's daughter who cares for an abandoned baby aboard his ship. On her way to New York she is assaulted by shipmate Gatson. The captain knocks Gatson overboard in an ensuing scuffle. A romance develops between the Captain and Sally and is now put to the test in New York by an investigation into the attack. In doing so, the girl's questionable past is revealed.
